This name combines a ran kanji, like 蘭 meaning “orchid” or 藍 meaning “indigo,” and 世 (se) meaning “generation.”

Popularity:
The name was likely first introduced by the manga ‘Tokimeki Tonight’ which was serialised from 1982 to 1994 and adopted into an anime TV series from 1982 to 1983, the main character being 15-year-old Etō Ranze (江藤 蘭世).
Regarding the name’s popularity, it wasn’t given to more than 0.005% of girls in any given year in the Heisei period (1989-2019). It is also in use among boys, though the numbers are likely to amount to several as opposed to the several tens for girls.
